Help your child learn to be a better listener

Parents; Have you ever found yourself wishing that your son or daughter listened better?  Do you feel that just a slight improvement in their listening skills would make a huge difference in their potential?

Getting your child to absorb 100% of what you’re telling them is a challenge that many parents and teachers face. Did you ever wonder…”Boy I hope he listens in school better than he does at home!”

Tenants of Tae Kwon Do

COURTESY

Taekwondo students should practice courtesy at all times in order to promote the spirit of mutual understanding, promote politeness to one another, avoid feeling superior, and encourage a sense of justice.

Courtesy may take many forms:

Politeness: when we say please, thank you, open or hold doors for others, allow another person to do something first, or ask instead of command.  …

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

Happy New Year everyone. I made class on Tuesday and Wednsday this week and I had a blast. I am rebuilding upper body strength that I lost when I had the flu. This the time of year when I am the weakest. The holidays are when I lose fitness. Has been this way for a long time, since I fought fire. After the new year the body will bounce back nicely. Looking forward to the new year.

Martial Arts Momma: Island mom Jan Eveleth gives middle age a kick in the teeth by DeAnn Rossetti

Check out this article at the Mercer Island Patch http://mercerisland.patch.com/articles/martial-arts-momma

All 5'3" of petite Mercer Island resident Jan Eveleth are poised on the balls of her feet, ready to strike at her opponent's padded gloves. With an ear-piercing yell, she launches herself into the air, feet first, slamming the gloves, and her sparring partner, nearly through the…

Does Self Defense really work?

Most people don’t ask me this question outright, but I know they are thinking it: Does self-defense really work?

That’s like asking the Sham-Wow guy if his towel really holds 12 times its weight in liquid, right? Hey, I welcome the believers and doubters alike, and I have more to offer you than my belief in the effectiveness of self-protection measures. But first, let’s figure out why it’s so hard…

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

Merry Christmas! The holidays are here and I made class this week. Once the holiday season is over training resumes in earnest. I lost a fair amount of muscle tone when I was sick. It will take a little time to put it back on. I can't wait for the new year.

I had a good time in class Thursday, I wanted to do more, but baby steps right now.

I will do more next week.  See you in class!

Weekly blog about my push for 2nd dan.

This last week was taken up with illness in our home, my wife was ill and I spent time taking care of her. Happy to report that she is doing much better. Not so happy I seem to have caught what she had.

On Thursday however I was able to be at Jan's test for her black belt, I was so proud of her. A good time to be sure.

As soon as I feel better I will be back at it. I hope to be back this Tuesday.

What kind of black belt will I be?

As a black belt, I will do my best always to...
be a good parent, daughter, sister, friend, teacher, worker, community member;
be thankful for all that I have and the wonderful people in my life;
lend a helping hand;
be kind to the earth;
embrace new challenges;
live life intentionally without regret;
keep an open mind and open heart;
see the miracle in…

Goals for future training and learning

"What are my goals upon having reached black belt for my future training and learning?"

Going forward, I'd like to integrate yoga classes with the martial arts classes to help increase balance, core strength, and flexibility. I'd like to continue refining the forms and techniques I have already learned and continue to work on building stamina.

Living Hero: Gail Cribbs

Two years ago during a time of huge emotional challenges for me, Gail was a stalwart and patient friend. She was a shoulder to lean on, an ear to hear, a voice kindly directing. She offered no value judgments on the feelings I encountered and shared on any given day during this tumultuous time--just the acceptance that they were what they were. Even today, some two years later, when those intense emotions resurface, she knows exactly what they are, and she usually can divine the reason for… Continue

Living Heroes: Writers, reporters, producers of "This American Life" 2 part series on health care

In October 2009, the NPR program "This American Life" hosted by Ira Glass ran a two part series on the complexities, absurdities, and intricacies of our health care system. A truly remarkable eye-opening journalistic piece. The reporters, writers, and producers of this show are heroes in my book for having tackled such a huge topic with finesse and thoroughness and communicated it in an engaging and understandable way.
