Focus and Martial Arts

Focus and TKD

I am always being asked how I got started with TKD and each time I have to laugh when explaining it. You see, I never in a million years thought it was something I would like or even try. If my son had not applied the magical little boy peer pressure, I would proba

bly never had taken that first class. But one day I found myself out on the mat during a family class and when it was over, I realized I had enjoyed…

Back to School Safety -- yes, it is nearly fall

With back to school coming up quickly, I believe it is a great time to refresh or address safety tips and plans with the kids.  So, I am going to post about several of the things I try to cover with the kids I teach each year.

"In 2010, one-fifth (19%) of all children 5-9 who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians."  Source:  Traffic safety…

Different Types of workouts and getting the most out of both

When I first started in classes it seemed it was mostly about the physical, gaining strength, gaining energy, gaining muscle.  Sure there was a small mental part required to concentrate on learning the forms etc, but it felt more physical than anything.

Now when I go to class, I am always wondering what kind of class is it going to be?  I have realized that some classes the focus is on the physical, strength, agility and endurance, some nights focus on the mental side of…

My Thoughts on Perseverance and Martial Arts

Perseverance

noun: steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success...

If the most important thing in martial arts is respect, the second must be perseverance. As I sit here in my big arm chair with my knee propped up with an ice pack on it, I am…

Universal Declaration of Human Rights

We are getting ready for the 2014-2015 school year, so I was reviewing some of the literature I have stored up to use in our curriculum.  And came across information on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  I haven't quite figured out how to use this with the kids directly, but thought a blog post was in order.   Such an interesting and powerful document.  In the wake…

Upon a Hero's Passing -- Dr. Maya Angelou

So many, more eloquently than I will, are writing upon the death of Maya Angelou.   For me, she has been a role model, a lighthouse, a trusted advisor -- an inspiration.  She has kept me company through the darkest of days, and taught me how to hold my head, and stand up, and to celebrate.   How to honor my ancestors, believe in the possibilities of today, and…

My Volunteering

I volunteered at a camp that I have gone to for the past three years. For 2 years, I volunteered at the camp to help clean up the camp before the actual camp starts. I volunteered during a weekend in April. We go on a ferry and a boat to get to the camp but once we arrive, we spend time the next 2 days cleaning up the trails and working on the tipis. After the two days of cleaning, we leave so the campers have a wonderful and clean camp to go to.

Update on MS Walk- My first hero - My Brother and all people living with MS

Last Sunday I volunteered to help at the MS Walk in Seattle- It was heartwarming to see the number of people who support this cause - As I was directing registration traffic, who started streaming in but the NFL mascots (I was trying to pay attention to my duties so could not stop them all for a picture). Attached is a picture of 2 of them.

In addition to the…

Volunteering at the Thrift Store

When I walked into the Mercer Island Thrift Shop for the first time I was ready to tackle my volunteer shift head-on. I got to go into the back of the shop, which was bigger than I first thought. There were stacks of books, boxes of electronics, people carrying in new donations every now and then. It was a really cool place, and everybody was really nice and helpful. On my first two shifts,…
